One of the hardest questions we can ask ourselves is also one of the most freeing: “What am I protecting?”
Sometimes we protect an old hurt because it has become part of our identity. Sometimes we protect our pride because admitting we were wrong feels vulnerable. Sometimes we protect our fears because they have become familiar companions.
Yet every defense we cling to also creates distance. Not from Hashem. From the person Hashem created us to be.
The Baal Shem Tov taught that the greatest concealment is not that Hashem hides from us, but that we hide from ourselves. When we stop running from our own hearts, we begin discovering that Hashem has been waiting there all along.
Elul gently invites us to loosen our grip—not on our values, but on the stories that keep us from growing.
Perhaps the question isn’t, “What do I need to hold onto?”
Perhaps it’s, “What has become too heavy to keep carrying?”
May Hashem give you the strength to release whatever no longer serves your soul and the trust to know that His embrace is waiting beneath it.
Reflection
Sometimes the greatest act of courage is letting go of the version of yourself you’ve outgrown.
