There is a quiet courage that Elul asks of us. Not the courage to change the whole world. The courage to look honestly at ourselves.
That kind of honesty can feel uncomfortable because the ego would rather explain than examine. It prefers to justify, defend, compare, or blame. Yet the soul longs for something much simpler: truth.
King David prayed, “לֵב טָהוֹר בְּרָא לִי אֱלֹקִים (Lev tahor bera li Elokim)” — “Create within me a pure heart, O G-d” (Tehillim 51:12). He wasn’t asking to become someone else. He was asking for the courage to clear away everything that prevented his heart from expressing its truest nature.
The Sfat Emet writes that teshuvah is not a journey outward but inward—a return to the place where the soul has always remained connected to Hashem.
Perhaps that’s why honest self-reflection is so freeing. We stop asking, “How do I appear?” and begin asking, “Who am I becoming?”
That question is never meant to discourage us. It is meant to bring us closer to who we really are. A G-dly soul seeking her Creator.
May Hashem bless you with the courage to see yourself truthfully, gently, and with the confidence that every honest step brings you closer to Him.

Truth is never the enemy of the soul. It is the doorway through which the soul comes home.
