“Hishtadlut is not about helping Hashem—it’s about hiding Him just enough to let us choose faith.”
When it comes to hishtadlut—our invested effort—and emuna, the Torah teaches us to differentiate between the material and the spiritual.
For material matters, effort should be limited. We do what’s needed to keep the process looking “natural,” but without becoming emotionally attached to results. Hashem is doing everything. He doesn’t need our help—He just asks us to show up.
In contrast, spiritual effort knows no limits—so long as it doesn’t overwhelm us emotionally. Torah learning, mitzvah observance, character growth—these are areas where our hishtadlut reflects our love, not our control.
If we constantly ask, “How much hishtadlut do I really have to do?” it may be a sign we haven’t yet let go. The answer? It depends on your level of emuna at that moment.

Today, ask yourself: Am I doing this to partner with Hashem—or because I think it’s all on me?
